This modification will allow the motor to take advantage of other modifications you make, it won't flow as well as an M2 but it is an improvement over stock. That system flows great and is quiet but if you are willing to put up with an open exhaust sound like you hear from factory high performance Mercs then you can just remove the exhaust baffles from your pump. I have retrofitted this system to an older style pump so it can be done but the parts are not cheap and it requires a good machinist. The M2 has addressed this by routing the exhaust back up out of the pump and out to a pair of pwc type waterboxes. The most deficient area in the stock Sport Jet 175 setup is exhaust flow which is so poor, the 175 is running on exactly the same exhaust system as the 90, that if you don't improve it the motor will not respond to any other modifications. There are a couple of options to upgrade this motor. Just so everybody has some frame of reference the 2.5 liter 175 SJ powerhead is almost identical to an outboard 150 XR6 powerhead. Please read what I wrote about Mercury pumps in my response to the 90 hp upgrade question because it applies here as well.
